Runner-up: ROWENTA DG8520 Perfect Steam Review

Rowenta DG8520Do you have many delicate shirts that the iron plate cannot come in contact with? You can use the steam feature of the ROWENTA DG8520 to iron these.

For the more thicker materials–let’s say you want to put creases into trousers–all you need do is switch to the iron feature of this station.

Previously ROWENTA perfect steam pressure iron/steamer is now ROWENTA DG8520 perfect steam iron station.

Quick facts about ROWENTA DG8520 perfect steam iron station

  • Color: Purple
  • Water Tank Capacity: 47 ounces (1.4 Liters)
  • Heating Time: 60 seconds
  • Max Steam Time: 90 minutes per filling
  • Steam Hose Length: 5 ft
  • Steam Cord Length: 6 ft
  • Steam Holes (small): 400
  • Volts/Watts: 110-120V, 1800W
  • Item Size (when fully extended): 17.7 x 13.6 x 11 inches

What we like about ROWENTA DG8520 perfect steam iron station

  • Can be used as both an iron and a steamer. (For the most part, the unit is dry and you can use it as you would an iron. If you need steam–just squeeze the trigger underneath the iron’s handle.)
  • Has adjustable temperatures for more delicate fabrics
  • Water tank does not get hot–so can be refilled while in use
  • Designed for use with regular tap water
  • Excellent for deep steam pressing–very little pressure required to get great results.
  • Incredible steam volume and amount (up to 90 minutes) that can blast through even the toughest wrinkles.
  • Since the water tank does not get hot, you get to be able to iron and refill anytime.
  • Very lightweight since the water tank is separated from the iron
  • Since the boiler is separated from the iron, there are no drips or spitting of water.
  • The 400 steam holes allow an even distribution of steam
  • Its narrower ironing tip grants access to smaller areas and doubles for more precision.
  • There is a lock to hold the iron in place so the machine can be easily carried from place to place.
  • Does not ruin your clothes since there is no water leakage.

What we don’t like about ROWENTA DG8520 perfect steam iron station

  • This steamer is expensive–on Amazon, it is $359.94.
  • The iron is less heavy than usual as some of the functions are on the main station. The station as a whole is, however, heavier than a simple iron but less heavy than other similar products.
  • If you have really hard water get prepared to clean the tank more often.
  • Makes an (audible) sound of an intense burst of steam.
  • Difficult to see the water level.
  • Customer service not so great.

Additional note. ROWENTA’s ratings dropped between December 2017 and August 2018 with lots of customers complaining about product’s quality and performance. It seems though that ROWENTA had fix this issue seeing from September 2018 and up ratings had picked again.

Rowenta 8520 steam iron station

ROWENTA DG8520 perfect steam iron station use cases

“…I just got this iron yesterday and I’ve ironed every pair of pants I own in about a third of the time it would normally take…”–Denise R. Samuel

“…So good for chinos and shirts – the creases come out immediately, and easy on my arthritis…” –LivG

“… I use this for my home sewing workroom…” –kimberly Grant

“…I quilt and this iron is the best to press out wrinkles for large quilt backings or lengths of material before cutting out pieces…” –Bob W

Our recommendations

  • Assuming you don’t have a defective product, if this unit ever leaks, check to be sure your iron is not upright (vertical). Always return the iron to the cradle or on the rubber heat-proof pad.
  • After prolonged use, you may want to give it 3-5 mins to build up a heavy burst of steam again.
  • Don’t leave water in the boiler; the water in the steaming pipe will condense.
  • Rinse the boiler and clean the cal with running water, if you usually leave the iron seating for a few weeks.
  • Steam flow is strong so keep your hands very firmly out of the way of the steam jet.
  • Manual instructions recommend using untreated tap water but if your water is very hard then maybe use half untreated tap water with half distilled water.
  • If you are refilling in between steaming sessions, remember to turn the steamer off.
  • Usually no drippings–but it makes sense to be patient and let the green button achieve full bar, indicating it is ready for use.
  • If the steam flow is irregular, check for kinks on the hose. Straighten the hose and things should get better.

Ready to take action?

This steam station is expensive but it’s worth the expenditure if you do a lot of ironing or iron regularly. It is larger overall than a conventional iron but on the plus side, it provides you with a continuous burst of steam for the tough jobs.

What we don’t  like about ROWENTA IS6520 fabric steamer

  • The hose isn’t very long (only about 6 ft) so you might need to move the steamer around to get coverage.
  • The pole does not extend tall enough to prevent a user from having to bend over to steam the bottom of garments.
  • Water hose and the steam handle could get hot.
  • You only get full steam if the hose is held upright.
  • The hose is plastic and therefore crimps as you move it around causing the steam pressure and amount to decrease.
  • Works pretty well on thin fabrics, but not so well on thicker fabrics.
  • Due to the pull-down screen, it also does not store well, even though you can shorten the pole.
  • There is only one steam setting.

Our recommendations

  • Get steaming mittens or gloves
  • Empty out any remaining water in the water tank and let it dry out after each use.
  • Because the nozzle does get hot, you should consider gripping far enough down on handle so as to avoid the steam. Plus, keep out of reach of children!

Most Powerful: JIFFY 2000 (Plastic/Metal Steam Head) Garment Steamer

JIFFY 2000 garment steamerHave you ever owned one of these professional steamers that leak at the base or sputter hot water everywhere?

User-friendly, efficient, and without the bells and whistles, the JIFFY 2000 garment steamer doubles for quality and power. Design-wise too, it is almost flawless.

JIFFY 2000 garment steamer quick facts

  • Color: Beige
  • Water Tank Capacity: 3.84 Liters
  • Heating Time: 2 minutes or less
  • Max Steam Time: 90 minutes
  • Steam Hose Length: 5 ft
  • Steam Head Length: 6 inches
  • Steam Cord Length: 6 ft
  • Volts/Watts: 120V, 1300W
  • Item Size (when fully extended): 10 in x 15 in x 64 in
  • Item Weight: 18 pounds

JIFFY steamer metal vs plastic head

The metal surface of the JIFFY 2000 steamer acts like an iron on an ironing board which is why many think it will be too hot and could potentially burn them or ruin their delicate fabrics.

But while the metal head has a wooden handle that will rarely break, this wooden handle, however, is heavy (some users find this rather uncomfortable reason they prefer the plastic head option which is lightweight) but you can easily hang it on the provided garment pole.

Overall, no noticeable difference in performance, but it’s looking like the metal head option offers versatility/durability while the plastic head option offers convenience/safety.

That mentioned, the metal head option is some dollars pricier than the plastic option. Regardless, you can order replaceable parts (plastic or metal steam heads) from JIFFY or Amazon.

What we like about JIFFY 2000 garment steamer

  • Simple to put together
  • Heats up within a minute, cools down almost as fast, and holds enough water (for up to an hour/ an hour and a half of steaming) for home and light commercial use
  • Can handle thicker materials
  • Does not take much space
  • The wooden handle (the metal steam head option) stays cool to the touch
  • Less gurgling and spilling
  • Sturdy wheels and a metal pole to keep the hanger in place
  • Rolling casters glide with ease and the JIFFY 2000 garment steamer feels well balanced
  • Minimal packaging
  • The JIFFY 2000 fabric steamer stores very easily in a corner out of site
  • The tank is really easy to fill and empty
  • Great customer support–attending to customers issues and offering unit or parts replacement.
  • Replacement parts are readily available

What we don’t like about JIFFY 2000 garment steamer

  • JIFFY 2000 may not be one of the prettiest things to have around but what it lacked in terms of aesthetics, it more than made up for in terms of performance.
  • Base tend to move around too much.
  • When emptying the water there is lots of water left over in the actual machine which is tedious to empty.

“I am a flight attendant! It works perfect on all my uniform pieces including my delicate scarfs.” –Palma Cardinal

“…I use it on my sticker linen backdrops for my photography business and it works wonders…” –Julie Polaski

“…I own a wedding events business, we do catering, rentals, decor, set up, etc. I bought this as an upgrade to my residential steamers…” —Rachael

  • If you are experiencing water leaks from the steamer head: Lower the setting and let steamer warm up for a few minutes; use purified water; also, hold up the steamer head so that it is higher than the handle.
  • Don’t place the steamer too high to avoid a low point in the hose which could get the steamer to stop steaming.
  • If you are encountering delayed steam going beyond three minutes: Ensure you have poured enough water into the tank and ensure the dial is turned to your desired setting (usually set from the manufacturer to the lowest setting and at this setting steam may not be visible).
  • To get good results pretty quickly: put your cloth on the hanger and focus on an area at a time. Also, try using the “high steam settings.”  Another technique that could work is holding the end of the garment and pulling it so it’s a little tight. For a heavy garment with big and deep wrinkles, you could consider spraying a wrinkle release.

Starting from the bottom of the garment means that by the time you reach the top, most of the wrinkles would have disappeared from rising steam.

It does get pretty hot; it is best to use the built-in hanger to avoid getting hurt.

How to Choose from the Best Standing Garment Steamers

In reviewing the 10 products above, and having carefully avoided the temptation to get carried away by the accessories, warranties, and features of each product, we advise you as well resist the temptation to get carried away by all the bells and whistles. Instead, focus on some of the critical details below. Or, in other words, here are some quick tips and tricks to choose your best standing steamer.

Water Capacity: The more the water capacity, the longer the expected steam duration. But remember that the heating element of some standing steamers utilizes water faster. Understand likewise that a steamer water capacity is only one (out of the many) considerations for choosing the best standing garment steamer.

Heat-up Time: This is the time until a standing steamer had achieved full steam and is ready for use. Consider a standing steamer that heats up very quickly yet produces powerful, continuous steam. All items listed in this guide heat up in two minutes or less–with the exception of JIFFY 4000 steamer whose heat-up time is about 20 – 30 minutes.

High Heating Power: In order to have a strong steam flow, a commercial clothing steamer needs to have a high heating power. Lower heating power means your clothing steamer will produce weaker steam. A weak steam flow means the steamer will be less effective in removing wrinkles. Do keep in mind never to plug another applliance in the same outlet you plugged your standing garment steamer.

Pole Height: A telescopic pole is a tall, adjustable, collapsible rod that accompanies most standing steamers. It is on this pole that the manufacturer’s built-in hanger rests (some manufacturers do provide additional hooks for additional hangers though). Without mincing words, a standing steamer with a longer pole helps as it lets you reach longer fabrics like curtain and drapes. The standing steamer with the tallest pole from our list is 7 ft tall; the average height is 5ft; and the shortest is 4.6 ft.

Hanger Type: Stationary, rotating and press hangers–three common hanger types. While the standing steamers with stationary hangers are the most popular, standing steamers with rotating and press hanger provides quicker access to target spots while saving you time and energy.

Steam Head Design: Metal or plastic steam heads are two steam nozzle designs. If you don’t already know, the steam head, attached to the hose, is the part of the steamer where the heat that is pressed into a piece of clothing comes from.

If anything, a large, wide-diffusion steam head makes wrinkle removal faster and efficient.

Either way, there is no winner or loser here–the two steam head design comes in packages of pros and cons. See “plastic vs metal steam head” subheading under the JIFFY 2000 garment steamer review for more details.

Additional note. If you have pets, consider a standing steamer that comes with a brush. You get to attach this brush to the steamer’s head and can use it to brush off extra hair on your clothes while steaming.

On/off Switch Design: This is like a bonus but best if the On/Off switch of your steamer is within quick reach–like it can be foot-operated. This feature ensures you don’t have to bend over anytime you want to turn on/off the switch.

Item’s Warranty and Manufacturer’s Customer Support: With the exception of a few standing steamers on our list (SALAV, PURSTEAM), products particularly from VIVIO, JIFFY and maybe ROWENTA are priced $100 and up. For a product at that price, you want to ensure it comes with a reasonable warranty (check the TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION section on the product page). Also, ensure the manufacturer stand behind their product post-sales. Both of these parameters have been emphasized under the “pros” and “cons” for each product as applicable.

Buying and Using a Stand Up Fabric Steamer: Managing Expectations

  • Different fabrics respond more or less likely to steam. For the best result (and depending on the thickness of the clothing material and the steamer’s pressure), you will want to hold the fabric taut and steam from the inside of the cloth and underside while slowly moving upward. You can find other steaming tips (which passes for some really smart techniques for removing wrinkles from clothes) under “our recommendations” section of the product reviews.
  • The manufacturers suggested heat up time and steam duration may be faster or slower, in reality, depending on a number of factors. Just know that some steamer heating element utilizes water differently, and more or less than the others, and this will definitely affect the steam amount and volume and ultimately steaming results.
  • Like anything in life, steaming as well require some learning curve. If it is your first time using a steamer it might help to watch some how-to videos. That mentioned, anyone telling you a crisp crease is possible with an upright fabric steamer (unless, of course, the steamer is the ROWENTA DG6520) is not being sincere. Yes, professional garment steamers pack a lot more steam quantity and volume (when compared with the handheld steamers) plus some of these steamers have metal steam heads. Metal steam heads are great for releasing wrinkles quickly and effectively–they won’t do much to press sharp creases into your clothes.
  • For light, occasional uses, a standing steamer in the category of products from PURSTEAM, PURESTEAM, and CONAIR are more than okay. For the really heavy-duty, rather frequent uses, consider products from JIFFY, VIVIO, and ROWENTA. Don’t buy a get-me-ready-in-the-morning kind of steamer when what you actually want is a steamer for your boutique or clothing store. The same is true if that statement were to be reversed because, you know, products from the likes of JIFFY, VIVIO, and ROWENTA, price wise, always tend to be on the steep side and this can only make sense from a business perspective.
  • If you are replacing your steamer with products from the same brand or even another brand, all you should have in mind is “does this steamer fit my needs or will it serve me well for the price I’m paying” rather than “how does this new steamer compare to my old one.”
  • Maybe not entirely true, but we have found that the possibility of a steamer developing issues increases with the number of people using the steamer.
  • Don’t be surprised if you are letting your steamer run out of water repeatedly only to find out, within barely a year of use, that is no longer working. And this is without mentioning mineral deposit build up in the water reservoir that you have refused to clean, which is now causing your unit to sputter, instead of producing steam.
  • Ability to store standing steamer should only be a plus. Many of the standing steamers listed in this guide do not fold up for storage. You can unscrew the pole–but you won’t want to do that every time. Standing steamers are meant to be rolled into a closet or behind a door and kept as is. These are commercial grade steamers after all–they are not meant for folding away. If you are looking for a foldaway, portable steamer, we recommend checking our guide on the best handheld steamers for home and travel.
  • For newer units hose can feel a little stiff. The hose needed to be thick in order to keep steam. Plus if the hose is not thick, kinking will result–which can alter the steam flow.
  • Also, the unit might produce an unpleasant smell when being used for the first time. You will be fine after a couple of uses.

What are Some Troubleshooting Tips for Commercial Garment Steamers

  • If your unit is taking longer than the manufacturer’s suggested heat up time, for JIFFY products, you could use lukewarm water as recommended in the manual directions.
  • For issues relating to inconsistent steam flow, maybe you should take the hose and turn it upside down as if you were pouring liquid out of it.
  • If your unit is sputtering, you might want to ensure there is no mineral build up in the water reservoir. If there are in fact some mineral build, follow the cleaning tips in the product’s instruction manual. Where such information is not available, add some portion of vinegar into the water in your water chamber and allow to heat up some five minutes. Empty the content of your water reservoir and refill with water. You should be fine now.

Final verdict: best standing garment steamers

As it turns out, all standing garment steamers featured in this guide have the features, quality, and durability expected from a commercial-grade garment steamer.

Three subheadings were also included: a buying guide, and two guides to help you get the most out of your standing steamer.

Attempts were also made in the guide to answer as much of your questions as you may have about each product–including a section under each product review highlighting what people are using their machines to steam so that you can know right off the bat if a steamer is or is not suitable to your needs.
